ABOUT THE BOOK

Annette's Christmas Gift

by Deborah Franklin

Thirteen-year-old redhead Annette, a newcomer to the New Horizon Group Home for Girls, feels isolated in a place where she is surrounded by girls who tease her, and her only real friends are Jill and Annettes faithful panda bear. She misses her mother terribly but knows her mother is not stable enough to take care of her. When Christmastime comes, however, Annette tries her best to be full of spirit and happiness, hoping that her mother will visit her. But when Ms. Wobbles, the houseparent, receives a disappointing phone call, Annette gives up all hope. Annette soon learns that Christmas is not about getting and receiving presents. But what will this Christmas bring to Annette? Will she receive her only desired Christmas gift?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Deborah Franklin wrote this story based on her own experiences as a young girl sent to live in a group home. She wants children to learn that a persons past does not have to determine the outcome of his or her future. A special education teacher, Ms. Franklin was honored by becoming a godmother to four former students: Aaron Williams, Shalise Bell, Jerrika Ransom, and Latonya Smith. She obtained her bachelor of arts degree in mass media arts from Hampton University in Virginia and is a 1998 graduate of the Writers Digest School in Ohio. She is currently seeking her masters degree in special education from Wright State University in Ohio. Ms. Franklin is also an active member of the Full Armor of God Baptist Church and started Reach ONE Consulting to focus on the needs of students with disabilities. (2008, saddlewire, 24 pages)
